Massachusetts State Police Evict Mother Bear and Cubs From Highway Median

Family of bears moved away from median

Part of a Massachusetts highway had to be shut down last week while state wildlife officials evicted a family of bears from the median where they had set up a den.

Massachusetts State Police shut down a portion of Route 2 in Templeton while the mother bear was tranquilized by state environmental police. The mother bear and her cubs were relocated to a safer location far away from the highway.

"Everything went beary well! Mother Bear was tranquilized. Mother & cubs have been relocated to a safe location by @MAEnviroPolice & MassWildlife in nearby State Forest," state police tweeted, along with a few photos of the bears. "Thank you all for your patience in #MAtraffic while we made this happen.

Both east and westbound lanes on the highway were shut down for about 45 minutes while state police worked to relocate the animals. The black bears were moved out of caution for the animal's safety as well as the motorists who travel down the busy four-lane highway.
