Churchill Downs Spring Meet Had It All

Posted June 30th, 2014 @ 5:10pm

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The spring meet at Churchill Downs had good, bad, and ugly.

Churchill Downs spent $29 million on a new big screen, terrace area, and other infrastructure improvements to the delight of record crowds who increased wagering from last year. Purses were slightly down from last year, as were the number of races run, and average number of horses in each race during Churchill Downs Spring meet.

Downs Spokesman John Asher says a small crop of foals is to blame for the lower numbers.  He says there's more competition for fewer horses than in the past. Asher says the track continues to work to improve horse professional and patron relations after several negative stories about the tracks hospitality.
